Stillness and Flow – Black-crowned Night Heron, Rivière du Chêne

After months of quiet observation and careful scouting, I was finally rewarded with the moment I had hoped for.

Each spring, the river runs high and muddy—beautiful in its own right, but not the vision I was chasing. By late summer, the waters clear and the level drops, revealing a rocky ledge where I can set up my tripod and wait.

The Black-crowned Night Heron is a patient hunter, and its stillness mirrors my own. With a longer exposure, I was able to capture not just the bird, but the fluid strength of the river around it. The result is a study in contrasts: calm against motion, presence against passage—wildness held, just briefly, in the frame.
